President Obama is currently announcing his plans to close the U.S. military’s detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, which has housed alleged terror suspects since the beginning of the War on Terror.
Some conservatives believe that Gitmo is essential to keeping dangerous fanatics from harming the United States, while others claim that prolonged detention, without trial, violates the spirit of our Bill of Rights.
All the disagreement means that Mr. Obama will be cheered by some and attacked by others today. So far, so normal.
But here’s the thing: Mr. Obama promised to close Gitmo when he was first elected president – seven years ago. That’s right, he’s already made the speech he’s making today once before … and he’s counting on us being too stupid to remember. The promise to close Gitmo was one of the centerpieces of his Hope and Change campaign, and yet he failed to deliver.
Perhaps this is why people are sick of Washington – the politicians keep making promises and then fail to deliver.
