The use of the word “nigger” in the public eye is very unfortunate and demeaning to many, even when comedians use it in their acts. But place yourself at a White House Correspondence Dinner and you are the Master Of Ceremonies and you turn around and call the 1st Black President Of The United States that word and more people should have reacted like CNN did.
I published a story about it just a couple of weeks ago where Wilmore purposely used the n-word during his act and it left the room in a stunned state. Sure, after they were shocked, they all clapped their hands when the event was over but the damage had been done.
I wanted to know why major organizations and television outlets were letting Wilmore get away with it. If a white man or women did this to Obama, hell would have frozen over. Well, I just learned CNN actually canceled an appearance by the not-so-funny guy after this happened.
Anyone who watched Larry Wilmore’s White Correspondents Dinner speech last month can understand why CNN might not have been thrilled with it. There were jokes questioning why Wolf Blitzer is still on the air, to a roasting of CNN’s status as a news network at all, and in particular, “alleged journalist” Don Lemon got a special and biting shout out.
Nevertheless, Mediaite has learned, Lemon personally invited Wilmore to come on his evening show to discuss the speech, the “N-word” and politics. After all, Lemon was clearly good natured about the whole thing as is evidenced by his reactionand the photos he took with Wilmore after the event.
Mediaite learned that Wilmore was scheduled to appear on Lemon’s show the evening of Wednesday, May 4 a few days after the speech. But that appearance was abruptly cancelled by a CNN producer shortly beforehand under the guise of needing to cover “politics” and to focus on the “Indiana primary” (which had ended more than 24 hours earlier.) Wilmore was never rescheduled.
So it wasn’t a joke?
Black people calling each other ni**ers in public — and the President himself, no less — doesn’t “take back the word’s power.” It just plays into the greater public’s perception that, “See, even they see themselves that way.”
(Try to) laugh it off if you want, Wilmore, but you just set race relations and perceptions back a few decades and declared “Open Season” that see, it really doesn’t matter if a black man has ascended to the lofty heights as President of the United States; he’s still a ni**er.
You should have closed with the less-volatile-yet-still-as-racially-meaningful, “my brother,” and kept the “my ni**er” to personal conversation.
I am glad CNN did what they did and I wish a lot more would have disciplined Wilmore. What are your thoughts? Do you think Wilmore should have publicly been censored for this lack of respect for the Office Of the Presidency?
