CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, appearing on his Sunday program, said that the rise of conservatism in America is exactly the same as the rise of radical Islam.
Zakaria was particularly condemning those conservatives supporting Donald Trump.
“A main cause of the rise of extremism in the world of Islam has been the cowardice of Muslim moderates who for decades chose not to condemn bad ideas and ugly rhetoric,” Zakaria said.
He then went off the rails claiming, “It is now clear that a similar dynamic has been at play in the world of conservatism.”
Zakaria added the similarities can be seen in Trump’s supporters:
Republicans have fed the country ideas about decline, betrayal, and treason. They have encouraged the forces of anti-intellectualism, obstructionism and populism. They have flirted with bigotry and racism. Trump merely chose to unashamedly embrace all of it, saying plainly what they were hinting at for years.
Folks on social media of course, pushed back at Zakaria’s extreme rhetoric.
@FareedZakaria u compare Trump rise in GOP to rise of Islamic extremism.Trump has not beheaded, crucified, bombed, tortured, killed no one.

@FareedZakaria moderate Muslims are punished & or killed if they "speak up" against islamists and shariah. Your premise is wrong.

.@FareedZakaria's Take is (as always) a blatant attempt to savage conservatism. Because of course.
Never trust a liberal with history.

Zakaria’s assessment of the rise of conservatism is woefully off base. It neglects the fact that calling your political opponents ‘pathetic’ or ‘loser’ is vastly different from cutting their heads off.
And it neglects the fact that Trump and his supporters are simply calling for a moratorium on immigration until we can verify the people coming into our country are good. Why? Because there are actual extremists out there killing and slaughtering people in the name of Islam. That’s not racism or bigotry. It’s common sense.
Zakaria isn’t the only one trying to draw parallels between conservatism and some of the most evil factions in the history of mankind. The liberal media has been working overtime to compare Trump supporters not only to radical Islamists, but to 1930s Germany.
