Los Angeles is reeling from a highly publicized officer-involved shooting that ended the life of a mentally ill homeless resident of the city. Several cameras caught the scene; at least two bystanders and the body camera of one of the officers involved.
One of the videos, below, went viral immediately upon posting. Over four million people have viewed the adrenaline-pumping four minute video, which has also been shared over 180,000 times.
The incident has the potential to rile Los Angeles in the same way that Ferguson, Missouri and later the country were by the shooting of an unarmed teen, Michael Brown. The LA Times reports on the crowd’s initial reaction to the altercation,
An angry crowd gathered immediately after the gunfire, as police cordoned off the scene and ordered onlookers to back away.
One witness can be heard complaining that there had been at least six officers to handle the situation, and that the mortally wounded man had been unarmed.
“Ain’t nobody got no … gun!” he shouts.
“That man never was a threat,” said Lonnie Franklin, 53, who said he was across the street when the shooting occurred. “The amount of officers present at the time could have subdued him.”
Investigators are continuing to search for videos, including from other bystanders and surveillance cameras on nearby buildings. If further videos show an overzealous police action leading to the death of an unarmed and innocent individual, which was alleged in Ferguson, a fire could ignite in Los Angeles against the police. Relationships between the police and urban residents have been strained across the country over the last year, since the deaths of several individuals and the escalated tensions regarding those deaths in other cities like New York.
