Combat Veterans are Being Forced to Give Money Back to Uncle Sam

military bonuses

I would somehow expect this from Barack Obama’s administration. They haven’t looked out for our troops for the last seven years and I can’t wait until this White House has a new tenant in a couple of months.

The Pentagon is asking close to 10,000 California soldiers who got bonuses to re-enlist and go to war to give the money back.

Here’s the kicker, if these soldiers do not give the money back, they could be slapped with tax liens, wage garnishments and much more. How’s that penalty for going to war for your country? I know most Americans who love our soldiers don’t know about this or they would be marching on Washington, D.C.

From LA Times:

Short of troops to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade ago, the California National Guard enticed thousands of soldiers with bonuses of $15,000 or more to reenlist and go to war.

Now the Pentagon is demanding the money back.

Nearly 10,000 soldiers, many of whom served multiple combat tours, have been ordered to repay large enlistment bonuses — and slapped with interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse — after audits revealed widespread overpayments by the California Guard at the height of the wars last decade.

Investigations have determined that lack of oversight allowed for widespread fraud and mismanagement by California Guard officials under pressure to meet enlistment targets.

But soldiers say the military is reneging on 10-year-old agreements and imposing severe financial hardship on veterans whose only mistake was to accept bonuses offered when the Pentagon needed to fill the ranks.

“These bonuses were used to keep people in,” said Christopher Van Meter, a 42-year-old former Army captain and Iraq veteran from Manteca, Calif., who says he refinanced his home mortgage to repay $25,000 in reenlistment bonuses and $21,000 in student loan repayments that the Army says he should not have received. “People like me just got screwed.”

I bet if Donald Trump were in office right now, he would find a way to stop this and allow these soldiers to keep that money. It’s just money and these soldiers they risked their lives to protect this country when they could have stayed home. Some did not come back and others will never be the same. Our soldiers deserve better than this!

This government wastes money on stupid projects and doesn’t have a problem with that, but it has the nerve to ask these men and women to repay bonuses they received? The audacity of this government is unbelievable.

How do you feel about the government asking for these bonuses back from our service members who protected our country? Share your feelings below in the comment section.

How I see it, as long as the soldier fulfilled the requirements for the bonus, that money belongs to the soldier. The CA Guard screwed up and the US Govt has to screw our soldiers over one more time. These soldiers are defending our lives and freedom while receiving a substandard salary. Yes, they have great health insurance, but take a look at how many military families are on a food assistance program.

This is absolutely despicable. These men and women give us their all, and all they get is a pittance. And then, they’re asked to give it back. Our government is pathetic from top to bottom. Trump/Pence 2016! Hillary for Jail!

  3. Sandra says:

This is BS if they want their money back they should go after who ever authorised it. And if it is in their contract then its a legal and bidding contract.

  4. Howard says:

    1. These guys and gal fulfilled there part of the contract
    2. Congress knew in advance this was going down, but waited to see if the public was going to cause an uproar.
3, The pentagon is guilty of breaking a contract
4 Congress is guilty (as always) of NOT doing there job, but playing politics.
5 These reservist should fill a lawsuit against the Military Chief of Staff (by name) Obama (as commanding chief of the armed forces) and anyone else they can think off.
