Here’s a weird story to start your week off: a woman who was declared dead over thirty years ago has reappeared this week.
Petra Pazsitka disappeared from the German town of Braunschweig when she was just 24 years old. A manhunt commenced, and, though no body was ever found, a local carpenter, Gunther K, confessed to her murder and was convicted.
Yet while this was happening, Pazsitka was hiding in an apartment she had secretly begun renting in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. She fled there the day she was expected to visit her parents, who promptly notified the authorities.
Once she was declared dead, Pazsitka spent the next thirty years doing menial cash-in-hand work, despite having just finished a degree in computer sciences just before she disappeared.
Pazsitka was discovered by police during an unrelated investigation into a burglary. Right now, she is refusing to explain why she chose to disappear, why she allowed a man to be wrongly convicted of her murder, and is refusing all contact with her surviving family.
Like I said, weird.
