The old rule “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” seems to have been lost on supporters of the Iran Deal. Iranian leadership has long made anti-American and anti-Israeli comments in the public sphere. Below are a few:
Of course yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure. They insist on putting pressure on our dear people’s economy. “What is their goal? Their goal is to put the people against the system. The politics of America is to create insecurity” – Ali Khamenei, Ayatollah/Supreme Leader of Iran
The Army of Iran can by itself destroy Israel. – Maj. Gen. Ataollah Salehi, Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Army
The day will come when the Islamic people in the region will destroy Israel and save the world from this Zionist base.” – Hojateleslam Alireza Panahian, Advisor to Office of the Supreme Leader in Universities
Those are only a few select examples, but there exist literally hundreds more that you can read all over the web. And these quotes aren’t from the distant past either. Just last month, the Ayatollah said that even if the Iran Deal goes through, “Iran will uphold its anti-American policies and continue to support regional allies inimical to Western interests.”
I wish I could believe, as most liberals do, that good diplomacy is the key to peace. But trust is a crucial element of any agreement, and Iranian leadership gives us no reason to trust them.
