Retired Okaloosa County, FL Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Myers, 64, returned to work as a part-time deputy earlier this year to earn some extra money to take his granddaughter to Disney World.
While serving a domestic violence injunction, Myers was fatally shot in the back multiple times by suspect Joel Dixon Smith, 33. At least one of the rounds struck Myers in the head.
Myers died after being rushed to an area hospital following the incident.
Smith was being served a domestic violence restraining order at the lawyer’s office just blocks from the sheriff’s office.
He was supposed to be turning over his guns to Myers, 64, when he pulled out a concealed weapon and shot the deputy multiple times, authorities said.
Smith was later killed when a SWAT team stormed his hotel room.
Governor Rick Scott said: “Our hearts are broken to learn of the death of Deputy Bill Myers. Florida’s law enforcement officers risk their lives daily to protect others, and any act of violence against these brave heroes is shameful and cowardly. My wife, Ann, and I send our sincerest condolences to Deputy Myers’ family and brothers and sisters in Florida’s law enforcement community.”
Myers’ body received a police motorcade escort on its return home from the hospital.
