Tucked away in the local news coverage in Boston is a shocking indication of not only how pervasive the terror threat is on American soil, but also how quickly we’ve become accustomed to jihadists in our midst. The Boston Herald reports,
The FBI and Boston police shot and killed a knife-wielding Roslindale man known for extremist views and arrested another person at an Everett home yesterday as part of an anti-terrorism task force investigation into threats to behead law enforcement officials, the Herald has learned.
The Roslindale shooting was captured by surveillance video, which Evans said shows Rahim “coming at the officers” as police retreated, telling him to “Drop the knife!” They then shot him twice, once in the torso and abdomen, he said.
“We believed he was a threat,” Evans said. “He was someone we were watching for quite a time. The level of alarm brought us to question him.”
Police plan to show the video to community leaders this morning and could release it to the public afterward.
“It’s our job as community activists to review and expect that information to see whether or not everything was above board and on point,” said Darnell Williams, president of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and one of those invited to screen the surveillance footage.
What might be as troubling as the discovery and death of the terrorist is the fact that community leaders were first and foremost concerned with how the police and the FBI handled the incident, not about the threat he posed to the entire community. This comes on the heels of the decision by a jury to sentence the only living perpetrator of the Boston Marathon bombing, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, to death. His college friend who obstructed the investigation in the early stages after the bombing was also sentenced for six years in prison.
Are we really so comfortable with prioritizing the rights of a man who lunged at police officers while armed over that of those very police who protect our families? Do we really care so little about a terrorist living among us that the discovery of his heinous plans doesn’t send shivers down our spines, nor does it send the media into overdrive covering every aspect of how law enforcement snuffed out a potential terrorist? It has to be a more titillating story than that of the transition of Bruce Jenner, yet, while Islamist extremists walk among us, the media remains fixated on the step-father of the Kardashian clan.
