Like many family members, Vera Turner choked back tears as her son approached the stage at his high school’s graduation ceremony.
But unlike the rest of the crowd, Petty Officer 2nd Class Turner sat hidden away, waiting to see her son and family for the first time in nine months. Turner has served in the U.S. Navy for sixteen years, and arrived home early after a nine month deployment to Guantanamo Bay. She decided to surprise her entire family, not even telling her husband that she’d be back. Staffers at the school helped her plan her surprise.

Good for everyone in that family!
