According to the FBI’s most recent data on background check numbers for gun sales for 2015 so far, the state that is buying the most guns might be a bit of a surprise to some.
The numbers say that Kentucky has run a total of 2,337,494 background checks through September of this year while the number two states, California and Texas, respectively only ran 1,164,806 and 1,059,166.
That means Kentucky ran more than both California and Texas combined!
When you look at the populations of those states, you can see that Kentuckians are purchasing guns at a much faster clip than other states.
To be fair, a background check does not necessarily mean a sale took place, private gun sales can occur without background checks in most states, concealed carry permits can exempt a buyer from a background check in many states. One background check can also allow a buyer to purchase multiple firearms in the same transaction.
