In what must be one of the craziest stories of the year, an NAACP leader has been exposed… as a white woman. Rachel Dolezal was born a blonde haired freckled girl from Montana, the daughter of two Caucasian parents. Fed up with their daughter’s lies, they exposed her. The Washington Post reports,
Lawrence and Ruthanne Dolezal, a Christian couple who adopted four young children — two of whom are black — while Rachel was a teenager, said her decision to misrepresent her racial background, if that’s what she’s doing, may be related to her family and social justice work.
“The adoption of the children definitely fueled her interest as a teenager in being involved with people of color,” Ruthanne Dolezal said. “We’ve always had friends of different ethnicities. It was a natural thing for her.”
Lawrence Dolezal said his daughter was involved in Voice of Calvary, a “racial reconciliation community development project where blacks and whites lived together,” while at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss.
“You speak and sound and act and take on the mannerisms of the culture you live in,” he said. When Rachel applied to Howard University to study art with a portfolio of “exclusively African American portraiture,” the university “took her for a black woman” and gave her a full scholarship.
“You’ve got a white woman coming in that got a full-ride scholarship to the black Harvard,” Lawrence Dolezal said. “And ever since then she’s been involved in social justice advocacy for African Americans. She assimilated into that culture so strongly that that’s where she transferred her identity.”
He added: “But unfortunately, she is not ethnically by birth African American. She is our daughter by birth. And that’s the way it is.”
As the story unfolded over the weekend, new outrageous details have emerged. In 2010, Dolezal apparently told the New York Times that she would be “nervous” attending a Tea Party rally, due to all of the white faces abound. Under layers of bronzer, Dolezal sports one as well, and her adopted brother told CNN he’s not amused at the years-long deception, which he was dragged into,
“She told me not to blow her cover about the fact that she had this secret life or alternate identity,” Ezra Dolezal said Saturday. “She told me not to tell anybody about Montana or her family over there. She said she was starting a new life … and this one person over there was actually going to be her black father.”
Since beginning the charade, Dolezal may have committed fraud, as she identified herself as African-American and other ethnicities on an application for a Spokane police ombudsman commission, CNN reported.
Dolezal is estranged from her parents, especially since they’ve dropped the bombshell about Dolezal’s true identity. She is due to discuss the scandal with her NAACP colleagues today, who are likely not going to be a welcoming crowd.
