Donald Trump took a surprise visit to Mexico yesterday, and liberal heads nearly exploded as a result. The former President of Mexico Vincente Fox told Trump that he wasn’t welcome there, and the son of cartel gangster El Chapo threatened his life. The current President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto was heavily criticized for even daring to meet with Trump.
Those who watched Trump speak live with President Nieto had their beliefs about Trump’s commitment to America confirmed. Even with Mexico’s President by his side, he didn’t tone down his rhetoric on the need for strong border security.
Standing alongside the president of Mexico, a measured Donald Trump on Wednesday firmly defended the right of the United States to build a massive border wall along its southern flank but declined to repeat his frequent promise to force Mexico to pay for it.
Trump, the U.S. presidential candidate who is widely despised across Mexico, also sidestepped his repeated criticism of Mexican immigrants following a closed-door meeting at the official residence of the country’s president, Enrique Pena Nieto. Trump and Pena Nieto, who has compared the New York billionaire to Adolf Hitler, addressed reporters from adjacent podiums flanked by a Mexican flag.Instead of discussing payment for the wall, Trump spent a good deal of his speech aruging the U.S. and Mexico must work together to end illegal immigration. “It must be solved quickly,” he said.
Trump has also spoken out on trade numerous times throughout this election, primarily focusing on China, but also on trade agreements like NAFTA (which is an agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico). Mexico’s President said that he’d be open to revising parts of NAFTA.
Nieto says he told Trump NAFTA was good for the U.S.
