When Donald Trump demanded $5 million from CNN to appear in the next GOP debate, many were understandably frustrated. Why does a man who touts a self-reported net worth of $10 billion need an extra five million? Gawker ran the headline “Donald Trump Attempts to Extort $5 Million from CNN.” NBC News referred to the request as a “$5 million ransom.”
But Trump isn’t just being a jerk. For one, his presence garners an amazing viewership. CNN’s Democratic debate attracted 8.7 million fewer viewers than the FOX Republican debate. Trump was onto something when he wrote to CNN’s president “While I refuse to brag, and you know very well, this tremendous increase in viewer interest is due 100 percent to Donald J. Trump.” And here’s what he wants to use the $5 million for, as quoted from Variety:
On Monday, Trump dangled the prospect to a rally in Macon, Ga. that he “won’t do the debate unless they pay me $5 million, all of which goes to Wounded Warriors or goes to vets. I would love to do that.”
Trump told the crowd that CNN would likely say he “is a chicken. He’s afraid to debate.”
Trump claims that the cost of an advertising slot on CNN would jump from $5,000 to $200,000 from his appearance.
