US Marine Refused to Remove a Bible Verse from Her Desktop – You Won’t Believe What They Did to Her!

The U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals upheld on Feb. 26 the court martial conviction of Lance Corporal (LCpl) Monifa Sterling, an active-duty Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., for disobeying an order to remove three signs with a bible verse from her desk.

LCpl Sterling’s job was sitting at a desk with a computer to resolve issues with base “smart” access cards. She had taped copies of Isaiah 54:17 (“no weapon formed against me shall prosper”) to the computer and monitor and her inbox.

She testified she posted it in three places to represent the Christian trinity. The court rejected Sterling’s free exercise and RFRA defenses: “[W]e reject the appellant’s invitation to define ‘religious exercise’ as any action subjectively believed by the appellant to be ‘religious in nature.’ ”

Our service members give up many freedoms when serving, but religious freedom is never one of them. The First Amendment, RFRA, and military code protect service members’ right to express their faith freely, and their right to free religious expression should be protected.

Monifa Sterling

A screaming irony. A U.S. Soldier who is willing to fight and die for religious freedom, is given a court martial for quietly expressing such religious freedom by putting a scripture on her computer. If the picture shown goes with the story, then Ms. Sterling could be considered a “triple minority” who is being denied her rights. This has gotten way, way out of hand. This whole mess is on a collision course with the doctrine of limitation of principle. Our military has become politicized and what it’s going to boil down to is whoever can be the meanest and nastiest group will take control of our military – and the weapons.

I’m sorry, are we in China? I thought this was the United States.

Persecution isn’t coming to the U.S. because it’s already here. And because of this new reality, we need to start taking bolder stances for our faith because further marginalization of biblical Christianity is growing more and more blatant.

If you believe LCpl Sterling is being persecuted for her religious beliefs share this story on Twitter and Facebook and add your comments below.
