VA Suicide Hotline Calls Ignored Because…

It goes without saying that the Veteran’s Administration has been a massive failure when it comes to taking care of our veterans. The wait times are so long I guarantee some veterans could finish medical school and treat themselves before the V.A. does.

According to a VA inspector general report, over 300,000 veterans have died waiting for care, and while not all were waiting for medical care (some were waiting for other forms of assistance), tens of thousands were. Even as funding for the V.A. rises, wait times have worsened, and the backlog only expanded.

There have been a number of recent stories of veterans attempting suicide outside V.A. offices, such as one who killed himself outside a V.A. hospital in Long Island. The Administration has a suicide hotline – but even that is as poor as their care. How poor? You won’t believe how many calls go unanswered – and the reason why.

More than one-third of calls to a suicide hotline for troubled veterans are not being answered by front-line staffers because of poor work habits and other problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the hotline’s former director.

Some hotline workers handle fewer than five calls per day and leave before their shifts end, even as crisis calls have increased sharply in recent years, said Greg Hughes, the former director of the VA’s Veterans Crisis Line. Hughes said in an internal email that some crisis line staffers “spend very little time on the phone or engaged in assigned productive activity.” Coverage at the crisis line suffers “because we have staff who routinely request to leave early,” he said.According to the VA’s own numbers, 20 veterans per day commit suicide.

Americans are up in arms about this and are demanding the VA hotline answer every single call from our brave men and women!

This is sickening. One quadruple amputee attempted suicide a few months ago after his calls to the V.A.’s suicide hotline were ignored (luckily he survived). He survived a war that left him without limbs – and it was almost the V.A. that ended up killing him.
