The murder of Kate Steinle by an illegal immigrant fired up a debate across the nation over illegal immigration, and “sanctuary cities,” which abide by procedures that shelter illegal immigrants. I never like to argue political policy over a single event in the news, after all, just looking at a single event doesn’t tell us anything about the frequency of a problem.
Luckily, for this particular topic, we have more data. Last month, the Washington Times reported that 121 illegals who were released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) went on to commit homicides. Now, this is where a liberal will chime in and tell us that illegals commit crimes at a lower rate than the general population. While this may be true, the illegals mentioned prior were all previously imprisoned for other crimes and released back into the community. It doesn’t exactly take a rocket scientist to predict what might happen when they are released. Likewise, how does that argument boil down to anything besides “people who shouldn’t be in the country in the first place aren’t as dangerous as they could be”?
It’s liberals who always apply the “if it only saves one life, it’ll be worth it” standard to issues like gun control, so maybe they should apply the same standard to other issues as well. Considering that in the year 2006 there were more homicides caused committed by all illegal immigrants than there were combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, immigration seems like a perfect start.
