An army of religious sisters, Talitha Kum, have been dressing up as prostitutes in brothels in order to do God’s work. How could this be possible? Huffington Post reports,
Studzinski said the religious sisters working to combat trafficking would go to all lengths to rescue women, often dressing up as prostitutes and going out on the street to integrate themselves into brothels.
“These sisters do not trust anyone. They do not trust governments, they do not trust corporations, and they don’t trust the local police. In some cases they cannot trust male clergy,” he said, adding that the low-key group preferred to focus on their rescue work rather than promotion.
“They work in brothels. No one knows they are there.”
Indeed, human trafficking is a little discussed ugly side of the human experience across the world. Last year Rolling Stone published an important piece on human trafficking and how prevalent it is around the world. Three out of every 1,000 people around the world are reportedly trafficked, with the majority being women and children.
The work that these sisters do, protecting the most vulnerable and abused of trafficking victims, makes it possible for so many to escape a truly hellish existence.
