Ever since the Hindenburg Disaster, civilians have shied away from airships, preferring instead the safety and comfort of fixed-wing airplanes.
But all that might be about to change, with the historic launch of the world’s biggest aircraft next month, which promises to revolutionize the way we travel the skies.
The Airlander 10 was originally designed for the U.S. military, but the project was cancelled and design company Hybrid Air Vehicles wasa forced back to the drawing board.
Now their futuristic craft – the size of a soccer field – is ready for testing. If all goes to plan, the Airlander could soon start ferrying cargo and even passengers.
Designers promise that the super-sized craft will be less noisy than traditional aircraft, and will emit less pollution. It also takes off and lands vertically, meaning it has no need for long runways.
