Donald Trump found an unlikely defender among the Hollywood elite when Obama campaign adviser and actress Eva Longoria said he has a right to host Saturday Night Live.
Numerous Hispanic groups have threatened NBC for allowing Trump, who has expressed strong views on illegal immigration, to host the show in November.
Longoria told a reporter for The Wrap that, “This is part of freedom of speech, freedom of press.”
She added, “He has his right — not only that, Lorne Michaels (SNL producer) has a right to book whoever he wants.”
Longoria told protesters that if they don’t want to watch Trump due to their beliefs, they have a right to turn the TV off. But forcing everybody else to not watch with them is fundamentally wrong.
The Daily Caller reports:
Eva Longoria is defending Donald Trump’s right to host “Saturday Night Live” after several Hispanic groups started a petition to get him dumped from the gig.
“This is part of freedom of speech, freedom of press,” Longoria said during an interview with The Wrap this week. “He has his right — not only that, Lorne Michaels has a right to book whoever he wants.”
The actress said that instead of protesting the show, those bothered by Trump should just change the channel.
“We as a Hispanic community have a choice to not watch it. That’s our choice.”
Longoria, a long-time Hispanic activist and Obama ally, is certainly no fan of Trump. But it’s good to see somebody with differing political views stand up for the fundamental right to express one’s opinions. It’s an understanding few on the left have.
